The Making of Quiet Things by Gary Curson and The Number may change the way recording will be done in the future. A Slam Productions release, this new album is a milestone for recorded free improv jazz. The Making of Quiet Things is the product of a collaboration between Gary Curson and producer Justin Paterson, senior lecturer at the London College of Music. The album was recorded at Vestry Hall Studios at the London College of Music as part of Paterson's research. Technical challengesPaterson asked the musicians to perform free improv whilst separated, unable to communicate directly with each other, without rehearsing, in one take. Paterson's goal was the complete separation of sound for each instrument for a second spinoff album using the tracks from this recording session to produce a new, synthesised improvisational work. This environment was extremely challenging for the musicians. The recording and producing of this album itself was a technical feat. Some problems with the recording session, particularly pressures of time and budget, meant complete separation was not achieved. Paterson attempted to remove the microphone spillage on the tracks and devised an algorithm and built software to do this: The "One-T". The results were presented it at the 2nd Art of Record Production (ARP) conference in Edinburgh last September to extremely warm reception from the academic and industrial community. Further development of this "One-T" project is continuing. Paterson hopes to complete the second album within the next year or two. Album Credits
Bisogna attraversare la Manica per ascoltare oggi un free jazz così intenso e appassionante. Protagonista del disco è un quartetto formato dal pianista Keith Tippett, dal sax contralto Gary Curson, dal bassista John Edwards e dal batterista Mark Sanders. Il più noto al pubblico italiano è certamente Tippett, per i suoi inizi con i King Krimson e la presenza da protagonista nell'avanguardia inglese degli ultimi 35 anni: basterebbe ricordare i numerosi dischi con Louis Moholo e gli altri sudafricani immigrati nel Regno Unito, quelli con sua moglie Julie Driscoll ed ancora con Elton Dean, la Dedication Orchestra, Paul Dunmall, Howard Riley, il gruppo Dreamtime. Come abbiamo anticipato, il risultato è superlativo sin dal primo lunghissimo brano, caratterizzato dalla voce stentorea del sassofonista e dalle intense relazioni con gli altri strumenti: il contrabbasso possente, la poliritmica batteria e il pianoforte percussivo e iterativo. Dal punto di vista energetico ci sono varie somiglianze col free storico ma l'estetica è molto più articolata e ricca di sorprese: situazioni ritmiche quasi tradizionali e momenti distesi s'intersecano alle sequenze magmatiche creando un affresco variopinto e sempre coinvolgente. La loro è una musica fluente, impetuosa e particolarmente inventiva, che non è affatto interessata a riproporre gli stereotipi del free ma guarda avanti cercando (e trovando) nuove soluzioni. Il duo pianoforte-contrabbasso del brano successivo si snoda in forma lucidamente astratta, "Bass & Sax Duet" evidenzia l'incisivo eloquio di Curson, in sintesi tra Dolphy e Ornette. Il piano solo di Tippett è un episodio magico, raffinato nella costruzione ma denso d'inquietudine. Concludiamo ricordando "Collective 1", il brano forse più significativo e sorprendente, che alterna momenti di travolgente forza espressiva a episodi d'astratto lirismo, dall'intenso e inquietante fascino.
